Mill Green to Mill Lane

Continue on the trail towards Hackbridge, past Culvers Island, where the river divides, and on to the site of Culvers Mill [37], where the wheelpit of the mill can be seen, and also two millstones on the lawns of the nearby flats by Hillside.

Walk down Culvers Retreat to rejoin the river by a modern bridge and cross The Hackbridge, between Nightingale Road and Hackbridge Road, turn left and on to the site of Shepley Mill [39] by the confluence of the two streams of the Wandle. Here the Croydon and the Carshalton branches of the Wandle meet, forming 'Wilderness Island' [40] an area of natural beauty tended by the London Wildlife Trust and open to the public. The Croydon branch is inaccessible at this point so the Wandle Trail follows the Carshalton branch, then swings east to join the Croydon branch later. Continue along River Gardens till you reach Mill Lane.
