Members Events:
Past: Members enjoyed a very informative and interesting visit to Wimbledon Windmill in June, where curator, Norman Plastow showed us round the newly restored ground floor section, refurbished with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the upper floors. See Ray Leyden's article below.

Nicholas Hart and Ray Leyden enjoyed the hospitality of Siobhain McDonagh, MP, at the House of Commons on July 24th, with representatives of other Merton voluntary groups. The strength of these groups in Merton can be demonstrated by the fact that Siobhain had to host two separate evenings to accommodate just two representatives of each group.

Present: Don't forget the Annual General Meeting, to be held this year at the Snuff Mill Environmental Centre, at Morden Hall Park, on Monday September 4th at 7.00 pm. Refreshments will be available. There will be no charge for these, but we hope you will be generous with your donations and raffle ticket purchases. Guest speaker Eric Shaw, a founder member of the Museum, and Volunteer, will give his slide lecture on The First Public Railway (the Surrey Iron Railway). We hope as many members as possible will attend.
 
Future: Special Visit to House Mill at Three Mills Island, on Saturday 16thSeptember, at 2.30pm. A special guided tour has been arranged for members. the Mill is close by Bromley by Bow station (District Line). Please ring Mary Hart on 8542-7534, or Sheila Harris at the Museum, 8648-0127, to let us know if you are coming (not essential, but useful).

The following day, 17th September, we have our heritage day event at Ravensbury Park - see article below. This needs our support as our contribution to Heritage Weekend, and a possible open day at Ravensbury Mill itself is on the cards.

A Christmas event will be planned - details in the next Newsletter.

15th August: Merton Heritage Centre new exhibition starts - ‘Planes, trains and automobiles - Transport in the Merton Area' Opening times 10.00 am to 4.00 (Fri/Sat to 5.00), Sun 2.00 to 5.00.
 
27th August: Farmers market re-opens at Merton Abbey Mills Merton Historical Society: Wandle Walk, Saturday 9th September, led by Eric Montague. Meet at The Wheelhouse, Merton Abbey Mills, 2.30pm
 
22nd October: Wandle clean up day.
1 st November: At Wandsworth Museum - lecture 7.30 pm ‘The Wandle Mills, from Mitcham to Wimbledon" by Judith Goodman.. Also 9th November on The Wandle Mills at Wandsworth by Dorian Gerhold. Tickets £2-50, from the Wandsworth Museum or tel 020 8871-7074

A Glimpse of the Past

Mitcham Mill, Willow Lane. The Times, June 30 1817 for sale by auction - ‘a powerful mill situated in Mitcham Surrey upon that well known stream, the River Wandle. The mill is in good repair and upon the modern plan and has 3 pairs of stones. The water wheel is 12ft wide and the greater part of the machinery has been erected within the last 2 years.
